Qwen-Image-2.1 went up on Hugging Face today, and ComfyUI shipped support for it the same afternoon, with repackaged weights from Comfy-Org alongside. The model is 7.1 billion parameters. Everything Qwen has released in this image line until now has been 20.4 billion.

That is the headline for anyone running on a card they bought themselves. It is also not the whole story, because the licence changed at the same time.

What we checked

We pulled every repo in the line off the Hugging Face API rather than going by memory:

Then we opened the licence file itself, because we have been burned by reading a summary of one before.

Section 2 grants use “FOR NON-COMMERCIAL PURPOSES ONLY”, and section 1 defines non-commercial as research or evaluation. Commercial use needs a separate licence, and the licence gives an address to ask at. There is also a “Built with Qwen” notice required if you use the model or its outputs to train something you release, and a rule against naming a derivative after Qwen. Chinese law governs, with jurisdiction in Hangzhou.

What is not in there matters too, since our last licence story went the other way. There is no territorial carve-out. Unlike the MiniMax H3 licence we got wrong in public, which withholds the grant entirely in several countries, this one grants worldwide and restricts by purpose. If you are experimenting, you are covered wherever you live.

The model, as reported

We have not run it, so this part is the release’s own account and the community’s first afternoon with it rather than anything we measured.

It does generation and editing in one model instead of two, takes up to ten input images, outputs at 2K natively, and produces an alpha channel, meaning transparency comes out of the model rather than out of a separate cutout step. Text rendering is called out as a strength, including for posters and infographics.

The alpha channel is the part we would actually want. Every transparent asset we make for an episode currently comes from a matting pass after the fact, and a pass you can delete is worth more than a quality bump you have to squint at.

What this means if you already use Qwen

Your existing setup is untouched, and this is the sentence we have not seen anyone write today.

Qwen-Image-2512 and Qwen-Image-Edit-2511 are still Apache 2.0 and nobody has changed them. We run Edit-2511 in production here, it is the model in the graph every ComfyUI edit is built on, and a new release under different terms does not reach back and alter the terms you already have. A licence applies to the thing it ships with.

So the practical split is straightforward. If you make images for yourself, for study, or to find out whether it is any good, 2.1 is available to you today and the size means it will run on hardware that could not hold the 20B versions. If you sell what you make, put anything with a client or an ad on it through a model whose licence allows that, and if you want 2.1 specifically, the licence tells you who to ask.

That last route is not a formality. We applied for a commercial authorization on MiniMax H3 two weeks ago expecting silence, and it came back approved in three days. Asking is a real option rather than a polite fiction.

Where we land

We want 2.1 for the transparency and the size. We cannot publish anything made with it, because we publish for money. So it goes on the bench rather than into the pipeline, we will run it against Edit-2511 on our own tasks, and you will get numbers rather than adjectives when we have them.

One note if you are installing it tonight. Day-0 support has become normal, which is a real change from even a year ago, and five days ago we wrote about a music model that shipped missing a component strangers had to build. Day-0 does not mean day-0 settled, though. Somebody on r/comfyui already found that re-editing an output with the same seed wrecks it, which is the kind of edge that surfaces in the first eight hours and is fixed or documented by next week. Change the seed between edit passes and you will skip that one.
